The acorn and the tree

Before I start this post let me start off by saying that I know I am going to be shot down from all sides. By people who say "I don't think children look like anyone - they look like themselves". Yes - Duh! - I know they look like themselves. But this is just for fun... But it is interesting and amusing to hear people's comments on my son's heritage.

From the day he was born, people say that he looks like his father. Sometimes he will give me a look that is pure "wilcock". It is in the way that the light catches his lip or the slant on his cheek. For me, I am most aware of the resemblance through his expressions. It is when he is bewildered or confused that I get flashes of his paternal grandparents... mainly because I think that they think me quite an oddity and frequently give me looks of bewilderment and confusion. Most people who know Dave will say, without reservation, that little Adam looks like his Dad. And I think he does too. It's in the nose, the mouth and the lips. Daddy's Boy.

Then, there are those people who know my mom. According to them, Adam is the image of his Granny. Most people will say that he has her eyes. And I agree. (Hopefully, if the eyes are the door to the soul, then maybe that means that he will have a little of her soul too). I can't really see the resemblance in real life, but it is clear as daylight in photos. Especially when the two are photographed together. My Mom's family arrived from NZ today and we met them at the airport. All exclaimed in wonder that he "is definitely a Robertson". Granny's Boy.

So where does that leave me? Well, the poor child inherited my red cheeks. The bane of my childhood and adult life.

But, I digress. This morning's meeting at the airport got me thinking... I always love to hear what people say about Adam and I have realised that people generally see what they know. Those who know Dave see Dave. Those who know my mom see her. (Obviously most people don't know me because no-one thinks he looks like me!!!!! ...ONLY KIDDING!!!!!!!!). The point to all of this is that I can see his Dad, his Grandma, his Grandad and his Granny in him. But what about my Dad? I have one photo of my Dad as a child. It was taken when he was a little bit older than Adam is right now. So it is interesting to compare. Here are a few B&W photos of Adam with my Dad's one at the end. What do you think??

well we know where he got his gorgeous blonde hair. I can see a lot of you in Adam but then I know you as you say. Ido think he looks a lot like his daddy but certain things he does and something in his face is totally you. You made me laugh with the bewildered look.
I think everyone will see a bit of everyone in your child. many people think Lily looks like Andrew , my brother, some people thik she is the spit of me. Kristians side see him. I personally think she looks exactly like me lol

It is so true - coming from a divorced family - everyone who knows my mom thinks I look EXACTLY like her and everyone who knows my dad says I look EXACTLY like him.
This is the truth and I am not just saying this now - when Adam was born I felt he looked just like Dave. Now that he is getting older I think he looks exactly like you. I know it is a perception thing - but i really do think he is you 'uitgeknip'

It's weird hey!! I did a post on this a while back too. Everyone says Jake looks like me, but most people don't know Jacques or what the rest of Jake's family looked like as kids his age. Looking at photos of Jacques at the same age as Jake, there's no doubt that he looks more like Jacques then me. In our case it's the hair, but Jacques was actually fair-headed as a kid too. I think we'll just have to wait for our boys to turn into men to see who they actually look like. I think it's great that they're actually little bits of all of us.

I love this photo of your dad and it is amazing how Adam looks like him. I have always thought Adam looks like Dave, but more recently I think he is looking more and more like you. I do agree though that people see what they are used to and looking for and that babies are made up of all little bits of all of us, that is the magic and wonder of genes!
